What is the JLPT?   JLPTとは何ですか?

The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) is a language exam conducted jointly by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services to evaluate and certify the Japanese proficiencies of non-native Japanese speakers. 
The test levels range from N5 to N1 with N1 being the highest attainable level and indicates a near native level of proficiency.

 

Why do I need the JLPT? JLPTの必要性とは?

JLPT is highly reputable and trusted by Japanese institutions and is a compulsory qualification for many positions in Japan. As a comparable metric, a minimum of N2 proficiency is required for a full time position in corporate as well as Undergraduate and Post-graduate positions in Japanese Universities. 

It is recommended to have a minimum of N3 for temporary positions in Japan. (internship, exchange programs e.t.c)
 

When can I take the JLPT? 試験はいつ受けますか?

The sign-up period is 3 months before the start of the exam. Typically, the JLPT is held 2 times per year, in July and December, but depending on the area you are in the dates may differ. Check out the official site for more details.
